If you run a shop, workshop or service business in Bihar and plan to take a loan, your CIBIL score will matter more than you might think. For most small businesses, the bank looks at the owner's personal score first, and at the business's own credit report for larger or company loans. This guide explains what the score means, what hurts and helps it, how to check it free, how to fix errors and how long improvement takes.
What is a CIBIL score and why do banks check it?
A credit score is a three-digit number, usually between 300 and 900, that shows how reliably you have repaid loans and credit cards. TransUnion CIBIL is the best-known credit bureau in India, which is why people say "CIBIL score" for any credit score. Three other RBI-licensed bureaus also exist: Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark.
Banks report your loan and card repayments to these bureaus. When you apply for a Mudra, PMEGP or any business loan, the bank pulls your report to see:
- Have you paid past EMIs and card bills on time?
- How much credit do you already have?
- Have you applied for many loans recently?
- Are there any written-off or settled accounts?
RBI has not set any minimum score. Each bank decides for itself. In practice, a score in the mid-700s or higher makes approval smoother, while a low score with recent overdues often ends the conversation.
Personal score vs business credit report
Personal CIBIL score
For a proprietor running a kirana in Gaya or a salon in Bhagalpur, the business and the owner are legally the same person. So the bank looks mainly at your personal score. For a partnership, the partners' scores are checked. Guarantors and co-applicants are checked too.
CIBIL MSME Rank and Company Credit Report
Businesses that borrow in their own name also build a commercial credit history:
- Company Credit Report (CCR): lists the business's loans, limits and repayment.
- CIBIL MSME Rank (CMR): a rank from CMR-1 to CMR-10 for businesses with total commercial borrowings up to ₹50 crore. CMR-1 is the lowest risk and CMR-10 the highest.
A partnership firm or private limited company in Patna with a cash credit limit will have a CMR. A new proprietorship usually has no separate business rank, so your personal score does the work. Commercial reports are available from the bureaus' websites, usually for a fee.
What hurts your CIBIL score?
- Late or missed EMIs: even one EMI 30 days late shows up. This is the biggest factor.
- Credit card bills paid only at "minimum due": interest piles up and your utilisation stays high.
- High credit utilisation: using ₹45,000 of a ₹50,000 card limit every month looks risky. Try to stay well below that.
- Loan "settlement": agreeing to pay less than you owe marks the account "settled", which lenders read as a partial default.
- Too many loan applications in a short time, each creating a hard enquiry.
- Being a guarantor for someone who defaults. Their default can show on your report.
- Errors: a loan you never took, a closed loan still shown open, or someone else's account mixed with yours.
What helps your score?
- Paying every EMI and card bill on time, ideally through auto-debit
- Keeping card usage low compared to the limit
- A healthy mix of credit, such as a small gold loan or two-wheeler loan repaid well along with a card
- Keeping old, well-run accounts open because long history helps
- Applying for loans only when needed, and to lenders likely to approve
How to check your CIBIL score for free
Under RBI directions from 2016, every individual is entitled to one free full credit report, with score, once a year from each bureau. So you can check four times a year for free by rotating between CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark.
- Go to the official website of the bureau (for CIBIL, cibil.com) and look for the free annual report option.
- Enter your name, PAN, date of birth, mobile number and address.
- Verify with OTP and answer the identity questions.
- Download the report and check every account.
Checking your own score is a "soft" enquiry and does not lower your score. Be careful with unknown apps and websites asking for PAN and OTP; stick to the bureau sites or your bank's app. Our guide on protecting your business from online fraud explains common credit-score scams.
How to fix errors in your credit report
- Download the report and mark every wrong entry: wrong loan, wrong amount, closed account still showing dues, or a wrong address.
- Raise a dispute on the bureau's website with the control number printed on the report.
- Also write to the lender (bank or NBFC) that reported the wrong data, with proof such as a no-dues certificate or closure letter.
- Track the complaint. Under RBI's framework, complaints should be resolved within 30 days. If the lender and bureau together take longer, you are entitled to compensation of ₹100 per day of delay.
- If still not resolved, you can complain to the RBI Ombudsman through the RBI's complaint portal.
Since January 2025, lenders must update your credit information with bureaus every 15 days, so corrected or closed loans should now reflect faster than before.
How long does it take to improve a CIBIL score?
There is no quick fix, and anyone promising a guaranteed jump for a fee is not honest.
- Correcting an error: usually within a month or two once the lender confirms.
- Clearing overdues and reducing card usage: you may see movement within 2-3 billing cycles.
- Recovering from a default or settlement: it usually takes a year or more of clean repayment. The old entry stays in your history, but its weight falls as good months pile up.
Example: a mobile shop owner in Ara
Imran had a ₹60,000 consumer loan for a phone stock purchase that he paid 45 days late twice, and a credit card he used at 90% of the limit. His score was in the low 600s and a bank declined his Mudra application.
His six-month plan:
- Cleared the overdue EMI and set up auto-debit
- Reduced card usage to about a quarter of the limit and paid the full bill each month
- Disputed an old closed two-wheeler loan still shown as active, with the bank's closure letter
- Stopped applying to new lenders for six months
By the time he reapplied, the error was fixed and his recent record was clean. The bank sanctioned a smaller loan first, which he is now repaying on time.
First-time borrowers: no score is not a bad score
Many young entrepreneurs and women starting out have no credit history. In August 2025 the Finance Ministry told Parliament that first-time borrowers should not be rejected merely because they have no credit history. Banks will still check your bank statements, income and project. Start by keeping a clean savings or current account with regular UPI receipts, and consider a small secured product like a credit card against a fixed deposit to build history.
Checklist before you apply for a business loan
- Pull your free report from at least one bureau
- Clear all overdues, even small ones
- Get no-dues letters for closed loans and dispute wrong entries
- Keep card usage low for two to three months before applying
- Avoid multiple applications in the same month
- Prepare a clean business plan for your bank loan
A good score also helps with collateral-free loans. See our guides to CGTMSE collateral-free loans and PMEGP loan and subsidy. Hindi readers can read सिबिल स्कोर कैसे सुधारें.

Frequently asked questions
What CIBIL score is needed for a business loan?
RBI has not prescribed any minimum credit score. Each bank sets its own policy, and scores in the mid-700s and above generally make approval easier, while a low score with recent overdues often leads to rejection.
Can I check my CIBIL score for free?
Yes. Under RBI rules, every individual can get one free full credit report, including the score, once a year from each credit bureau: CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark.
How long does it take to correct an error in my CIBIL report?
Under RBI's framework, a complaint should be resolved within 30 days. If the bureau or lender delays beyond that, you are entitled to compensation of ₹100 per day of delay.
What is the CIBIL MSME Rank?
CIBIL MSME Rank (CMR) rates businesses with total commercial borrowings up to ₹50 crore on a scale of CMR-1 to CMR-10, where CMR-1 means lowest risk. It is based on the business's own credit history.
Will a bank reject me if I have never taken a loan?
It should not reject you only for having no credit history. The Finance Ministry told Parliament in August 2025 that first-time borrowers should not be rejected merely because they have no credit history, though banks still do their own checks.
